Congratulations to local author and librarian Helen Rolfe whose book Honouring High Places: The Mountain Life of Junko Tabei has won the Mountaineering History Award at this year’s Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival!

With today being International Day of the Girl, I had the chance to speak with Helen about the life of a pioneering Japanese mountaineer, the long and sometimes comical process of translating Junko’s words into English text, and the tragedy that almost derailed the book as it neared completion.

Honouring High Places: The Mountain Life of Junko Tabei is now available at Cafe Books, the Canmore Library, and online.
