Canmore Folk Music Festival Artistic Director Sue Panning joined me on air for our annual Folk Fest Takeover! For a full hour this morning we blew out our regular playlist to share songs from artists appearing at this year’s festival and details on what’s new and exciting August 3rd – 5th. Listen to our chat and all songs below.

Sue sets up a song from The Jerry Cans, the first ever band from Nunavut to appear at the Canmore Folk Fest:

Sue talks about the free Festival Friday show on August 2nd, which has been moved to Centennial Park and will feature Michael Bernard Fitzgerald along with a ton of local talent.

Sue discusses the new Artist Development Fund they’re launching to help provide sustainable support to musicians in the Bow Valley, and shares her excitement landing Josh Ritter to close out the festival on Monday night.

Sue answers the question “What is Folk Music?” when it comes to putting together the annual lineup and shares insights into how she pairs up artists for the Sunday and Monday afternoon workshops.

Sue sets up the music of Darlingside, the band I’m personally most excited to see at this year’s festival.

Sue talks about the family friendly environment and all the activities that will be available for kids at the Folk Fest, and tells us more about Sunday night’s dance band The East Pointers.

Sue discusses the newly expanded Mountain FM Pub Stage at the Canmore Miners Union Hall and shares music from an at that she thinks people will be talking about.

Sue speaks about volunteers, sponsors, and tickets, and wraps up the takeover with a song from Alberta’s own Leeroy Stagger.
