This weekend is the annual Miners’ Day gathering and event in Canmore and they’re honouring a major milestone.  It was 40 years ago this week that the Canmore mines officially closed.

I spoke with Amy Herr from the Canmore Museum about Saturday’s expanded Miners’ Day lineup, including the parade at noon from the NWMP Barracks to the Civic Centre Plaza, the launch of the museum’s new Inside the Mine VR experience, and a project to collect stories from anyone who lived through the mine closure who will be in town this weekend.

I also had a chance to speak with local mining legend Gerry Stephenson, who shared his recollections on the events leading up to the closure of the mines and why Canmore has continued to survive and thrive since.
