ROB MURRAY: There’s a great show coming up at The Shops of Canmore Amphitheatre on Thursday, August 19thComedy in the Corner, featuring Scott Dumas and hosted by Amy Trofimuk. They’re both joining me on the show. I didn’t even realize there was an amphitheatre or any kind of performance space at The Shops of Canmore. What’s this new venue?

SCOTT DUMAS: Well, Rob, you’re not the only one. I went over there to see how things went for a comedy event at Sensory. The owner of Sensory asked if I’d thought about doing outdoor shows. He said, what about over in the corner, over there between Spiritleaf and Rocket Pie? I had no clue what he was talking about, so we walked over and sure enough there’s some natural amphitheatre rock seating. It was all designed by a Neil Tanner at Tanner Properties and his team to make that area for entertainment, and because of the lockdown nothing has ever gone on there. I started planning this at the end of last year and over the course of this summer. We’re putting on this very first Comedy in the Corner and we’re very stoked about it, so hopefully more entertainers and people will be able to use that spot in the future.

RM: Amy, you’re going to be hosting the show. Who else is performing on Thursday?

AMY TROFIMUK: Back in the day, when I started comedy, I worked with Cory Mack, Tony Binns, and Scott Dumas. It’s so cool, I’m just so blessed to be able to host this in my hometown with the people that I know.

RM: A great lineup of veteran comedians.

AT: That it is, we’re all 20-plus years in the making.

SD: Cory and Tony have been in the game for a long time. Cory was a part of the YYCOMEDY Festival that was running in Calgary for a while, she’s been on Just for Laughs a few times, and you might’ve heard her on The Debaters. Tony’s an all-around funny man, he wrote and directed a movie recently called #Roxy, which is hilarious. He’s a headliner with Yuk Yuk’s and he’s also an amazing improv guy himself, part of Obscene But Not Heard Improv.

RM: Comedy in the Corner is happening Thursday night starting at 7:30. Is this going to be a family friendly show? You’re outdoors in an open area.

SD: Yes, people are allowed to bring their children. We are aware that it’s an open space. It is family friendly, but it is adult comedy.

RM: This is a fundraiser as well, I believe?

SD: Yes, it is. The Bow Valley SPCA is going to receive the proceeds. If you’re interested in tickets they’re on Eventbrite.

RM: Amy, I’d imagine it’s been a challenge for a standup comedian during COVID. I bet you’re pretty excited to be doing a big show here in your hometown.

AT: We’re all nervous because we haven’t been on the stage much in a long time. I’ve had a few sleepless nights lately.
