ROB MURRAY: I’m speaking with Jessica Rothnie. Last year you brought the big Halloween Parade back to Canmore. We’re not doing that again this year, are we?

JESSICA ROTHNIE: Right. The good ol’ virus put a stop to that one.

RM: Yeah, no kidding. Lots of people gathering together. You’re organizing something different, something new, aren’t you?

JR: Not new, exactly. I’m bringing back Trunk or Treat, which is something that I understand Canmore had quite a while ago, before I had kids.

RM: What exactly is a Trunk or Treat?

JR: We’ll have a few of our volunteers come along with their cars all decorated up and they will hand out candy from the back of the vehicle. And this will be at the Malcolm Hotel this year.

RM: The Malcolm and Spring Creek – they’re helping you out with this?

JR: Absolutely. They really helped me pull this one out of the bag, that’s for sure.

RM: When is it going to be happening?

JR: On Halloween day, so Saturday, October 31st, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

RM: People can just bring their kids down and walk from car to car?

JR: Exactly. We will have COVID protocols in place, but really we’re just all about having fun and keeping it outdoors so it doesn’t have to be too restricted.

RM: Are you still looking for some vehicles for this?

JR: We are. We have some spaces left if anybody would like to decorate their vehicle and come on down and help us out that day. Anybody who is volunteering will not have to bring their own candy. That will all be purchased by our sponsors and I’ll be bagging that beforehand so it’s all nice and sterilized and as clean as possible.

RM: How can people get in touch with you if they’d like to participate in this with their vehicle?

JR: At 403-431-6669 or through Facebook.

RM: Can you tell us about the pumpkin carving contest?

JR: The pumpkin carving contest will be open to adults only this year, unfortunately. You can enter as an individual or as a business. The reason we’re keeping it to adults only this year is because we’ll only have one category to vote in to make things as simple as possible so people aren’t handling oens and whatnot. you can enter by sending me an email.

RM: How is it going to be judged?

JR: We won’t be able to facilitate the carving this year, so you’ll just drop the pumpkin off pre-carved and we will let the winner know by the end of the day.

RM: Where will they be on display?

JR: Right outside the Malcolm Hotel.
