I spoke with Jolene Gunn from the Bow Valley Primary Care Network about some changes you may notice at your pharmacy and how they’re currently responding to the pandemic.

Rob: I understand that most pharmacies in the Bow Valley are offering options for those who can’t or don’t want to go inside.

Jolene: I am so proud of what our Bow Valley community pharmacies have been doing. They are offering delivery services to those who should need it or would like to request it. Many of them do have curbside pickup options available as well.

Rob: And is that just a matter of contacting the pharmacy to find out what they’re doing?

Jolene: Definitely call your pharmacy when you need a refill or if you have a new prescription and ask about their options.

Rob: As far as how pharmacies are operating right now, what are some things that people should know?

Jolene: You should not go into this pharmacy if you’re feeling unwell or ill, particularly if you have like symptoms like fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Complete that self-assessment online or call 811 if you feel that the online tool isn’t user friendly for you. Call ahead to your pharmacy when you need a refill or if you have any questions; your pharmacy team is definitely still there to help you and they’d love to chat over the phone just to reduce that in person time that you may need to spend in the store.

Encourage your physician to fax in any new prescriptions. I know many of our local physicians are doing a great job of doing that, just to make the process more efficient for you and your pharmacy team.

Rob: What about social distancing? Is that being practiced at most pharmacies right now?

Jolene: Definitely. Practice that physical distancing when you go in; try to maintain that two meter space between you and other people that may be in the pharmacy and with your pharmacy team member. This also helps to provide a degree of confidentiality.

Rob: Why is there a 30 day limit on some prescriptions right now?

Jolene: You’re right, Rob, there is that limit of 30 days that you’re able to get at any given time. This is to ensure that all Albertans have continued access to medications they need throughout the pandemic.

Please continue to connect with your family physician for any of your health needs at this time, including chronic or existing conditions and new health concerns. Your family physician can help you determine how best to assess your needs. They can do it over the phone, they can do it virtually or even in person. If you do need who I highly recommend still connecting with your family physician and your pharmacy team if you have any questions.
