This video timelapse of the restoration of the Kananaskis Country Golf Course‘s famous double green is a great summary of over four years of hard work to restore the area severely damaged in the 2013 floods.  The course was hit hard that June by the overflowing Kananaskis River and Evan-Thomas Creek.

After a lot of hard work, a few hurdles, and an $18 million price tag the Kananaskis Country Golf Course is almost back in business. The Mt. Lorette 18-hole course is in amazing shape!

They anticipate being able to open the Lorette and the front nine of the Kidd course to the public in May 2018 with the rest of Kidd to follow next summer.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of a media sneak-a-peek day this week and was truly impressed by the condition and quality of the course.  They’ve done an outstanding job of both restoring the course to Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s original design while adding a few tweaks to improve pace of play, wildlife movement, and more.  They’ve also done a lot of work to make the course more accessible – each hole has up to 6 tee boxes to give newcomers and kids the opportunity to play the front tees without feeling like they’re out of their element and more experienced golfers the challenge K-Country is known for from the back tees.  Here’s a few snaps from a great day of golf!

The real highlight of my day was hearing GM Darren Robinson and Golf Pro Bob Paley speak passionately about the course and the connection people have with this place. The outpouring of support they received during the darkest times made them realize how important the Kananaskis Country Golf Course was to everyone who plays and works there, and their pre-game presentation gave me a new perspective on the love that went into this restoration and how golf is truly more than just a sport.

I spoke with Darren on the show about the past four years.

Tanya and I also chatted about our experience at this week’s event.

To keep up to date on restoration and when they’ll start booking tee times for next season give them a Like on Facebook.  And yes, the popular discounted rate for Albertans will be back in effect – this is our course after all!
